No Ordinary Park Bench: Virgin Atlantic’s street campaign in NYC

| October 31, 2013 | 12 Comments More

How can an airline advertise their in-flight services and make it memorable? Virgin Atlantic took to the streets of New York City. Here’s what they did.

Unsuspecting New Yorkers who happened to sit on a red bench in a Manhattan park got to experience the airline’s first-class services. From out of the blue, Virgin Atlantic flight attendants appeared, carrying a Champagne tray and lunch menu. When the “passengers” chose entertainment options from a monitor attached to the bench, actors performed live-action sequences based upon the selection.

This was all part of a marketing campaign, centered on the message of “flying in the face of the ordinary.” I enjoyed watching the video, because I like airlines that display a distinct personality. While I often make my purchase decisions based on airfare prices, some of my best flights have been with airlines that make the “jetting around” experience fun.

What do you think of the video? Would you take it into account when choosing an airline for your next flight?

Awesome post! I base my choices on price too, which means I have yet to experience many of the finer airlines and services!

    • Thanks, Keane! I’ve flown Virgin America, which is in the same airline group as Virgin Atlantic, and I really enjoyed their “funky” color scheme and overall vibe. Plus I’ve heard great things about Atlantic’s service from a friend, so I would love to try them one day.

I also usually base my purchase on price but always look for airlines that do something nice or different.

  5. I love a playful airline, when you can find one! Delta’s pre-takeoff videos have been pretty clever too.
