5 Boutique Picks in Chicago’s Bucktown Neighborhood

Located on Chicago’s near northwest side, the Bucktown Shopping District is a quick ride from downtown and a great place to find local designers and unique styles.

The area covers several blocks of Damen Avenue, stretching from North Avenue to Fullerton Avenue (see map below). In addition to clothing boutiques, it is home to numerous restaurants, bars and spas, and is best explored on foot. Here are five women’s boutiques in Bucktown worth visiting.

Michelle Tan
1920 N. Damen Ave.
Chicago, IL 60647
Phone: (773) 252-1888

Winner of numerous awards, Michelle Tan specializes in deconstructed designs, unfinished hem and unique cuts. The boutique carries dresses, jackets, tops, bottoms, jewelry, handbags, and accessories by Michelle and other local designers. You may run into her while visiting the shop – a minimalist, all-white space, featuring floating hangers.

Jetting Around’s pick: tops with sewed-on details, large necklaces

Claudia Kleiner Malabar Collection (now closed)
1872- 1S N. Damen Ave.
Chicago, IL 60647
Phone: (773) 321-6685

Located next door to Michelle Tan, Claudia Kleiner has nevertheless a different vibe. The store offers skirts and dresses that emphasize femininity, and the collections are modern, yet with a classic feel. Also available: work attire, jewelry, and accessories. Malabar refers to a fragrant flower found in South America, where the designer once lived.

JA’s pick: elegant skirts, summer dresses

With exposed brick walls and antique touches, Roslyn is a warm, inviting space. The store specializes in hard-to-find brands and features sophisticated pieces by established and new designers from Chicago, LA, New York and Europe. It also carries bridal and special-occasion dresses and jewelry by local artists.

JA’s pick: Mineralogy jewelry collection

No ordinary store furniture at Roslyn

Dress Up Boutique
1937 N Damen Ave
Chicago, IL 60647
(773) 235-7780

This spacious, comfortable store caters to modern tastes and sells trendy, unique pieces at moderate prices. It features a variety of labels, both local and national, including clothing by emerging designers. Also available: accessories, jewelry, shoes.

JA’s pick: floor-length skirts

Roomy store floor at Dress Up

1719 N Damen Ave
Chicago, IL 60647
(773) 772-0505

The mother/daughter-operated store has been in Bucktown for nearly 15 years, one of the first boutiques to open there. Tangerine carries everyday and formal wear, denim, and jewelry for a variety of tastes and all ages, by local and international designers.

JA’s pick – tops and tunics

Even the checkout counter is stylish at Tangerine

Editor’s Note: Some of the boutiques have been my long-time favorites, others recommended by wardrobe stylist Emmanuel Gutierrez, whom I had met at Claudia Kleiner. Many thanks for his expertise and research. Read more about our shopping spree.
